Facial Pain & Headaches

Chronic facial pain and headaches can be debilitating, frustrating, and difficult to diagnose. At Indiana Orofacial Pain, we specialize in identifying and treating complex pain conditions that affect the face, head, and jaw. Whether your pain is dull and persistent or sharp and unpredictable, our team—led by board-certified Orofacial Pain Specialist Dr. Massimiliano (Max) Di Giosia—provides the expertise and personalized care needed to help you feel like yourself again.

What Is Facial Pain?

Facial pain refers to discomfort or pain felt anywhere in the face—around the eyes, cheeks, jaw, temples, mouth, or forehead. It can result from nerve dysfunction, joint or muscle disorders, trauma, or other underlying medical conditions. In some cases, pain that starts in the jaw (such as TMJ disorders) can radiate and mimic migraines or sinus pressure, making diagnosis complex.

What Causes Facial Pain and Headaches?

Facial pain and headaches can have a wide range of causes, including:

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
  • Trigeminal neuralgia or other nerve-related conditions
  • Myofascial pain (muscle pain in the face and neck)
  • Sinus issues or infections
  • Dental or bite problems
  • Tension-type headaches
  • Migraines
  • Sleep disorders (like sleep apnea)
  • Post-surgical pain or facial trauma
  • Stress and clenching habits

Dr. Giosia’s training in headache medicine and orofacial pain allows for an integrated evaluation that considers the full spectrum of contributing factors—whether musculoskeletal, neurological, or behavioral.

What’s the Difference Between Facial Pain and Headaches?

While they often overlap, facial pain and headaches originate from different sources:

  • Facial pain is often localized to one area of the face or jaw and may be linked to nerves, muscles, or joints.
  • Headaches are typically broader and can present with throbbing, pressure, or stabbing sensations across the temples, forehead, or scalp.

In many patients, both occur together, especially when TMJ dysfunction or nerve pain is involved. Treating one often improves the other.

Common Symptoms

You may benefit from a specialist evaluation if you're experiencing:

  • Persistent or recurring pain in the jaw, cheeks, temples, or forehead
  • Tension or tightness in the facial or neck muscles
  • Pain that worsens with chewing, speaking, or yawning
  • Sudden, stabbing facial pain (possible nerve-related origin)
  • Dull, aching pain behind the eyes or around the sinuses
  • Chronic migraines or tension-type headaches
  • Pain that does not respond to standard headache medications
  • Clicking or locking of the jaw joint
